EULESS Hundreds gathered in Euless yesterday to honor Speaker Jim Wright and the contributions he’s made to his community, state and nation through 35 years of dedicated public service. Former Houston Mayor Bill White was in attendance and delivered a personal tribute and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Speaker Wright’s former colleague, Leon Panetta, who later served as White House Chief of Staff, provided video tributes highlighting the importance of Speaker Wright’s national leadership in Congress.
“Jim was committed to our future because he cared what we pass on to our children,” said Leon Panetta in a video tribute.
The dinner was sponsored by the Mid-Cities Democrats, a grassroots organization in North Texas. “We are truly honored to salute Speaker Wright’s many accomplishments. We are especially proud to be able to dedicate a portion of the proceeds to a scholarship in his name because educational opportunity has always been important to Speaker Wright,” said Todd Hill, Vice-President of the Mid-Cities Democrats.
Speaker Jim Wright was first elected to Congress in 1954 and served the 12th Congressional District for 35 years. Wright rose to Majority Leader and eventually Speaker of the House.
