Omega’s Tex-Mex Cafe re-opens on Commerce Street in Deep Ellum
DALLAS Thanks to a tip from Clay213 comes the news that Omega's Tex-Mex Cafe officially opened on Friday September 14 at 2713 Commerce Street, across from Angry Dog and St. Pete's Dancing Marlin, that was previously Fat Ted's (and also a bunch of other places including George Wesby's and something called Ixm, and was, way back when, the legendary Prophet Bar -- check out the Observer-editing byline on this 1991 story).
Owner Omega Martinez says that her restaurant, which had been open in the Crowdus location for 11 years, had no rental agreement; and that the biker bar next door, Reno's Chop Shop (whose name seems awfully reminiscent of the world-famous Rob's Chop Shop in Exposition Park) needed more space. She was glad to have the Fat Ted's space since it had a kitchen that was good to go. She'll keep doing Tex-Mex, but also add authentic Mexican dishes, too, including albondigas (meatball) soup for which she has a family recipe. The alcohol policy is still BYOB for now, but she's considering applying for a liquor license, too.
