Theater Spotlight of the Week: Katherine Owens

2

Interview with Katherine Owens, Artistic Director of Undermain Theatre

Undermain Theatre in Deep Ellum is about to launch its 24th season with the opening of Shining City this weekend. I thought it would be perfect to feature Katherine Owens this week who is not only directing the show, but also the Artistic Director for Undermain Theatre.

We start off by talking about the founding of Undermain and how she came to become the Artistic Director. I ask her about how the company has been able to stay alive for so long, the obstacles it faced, the growth, and what niche the theater company fills for the DFW community. She even has some good insights into the word "niche."

She talks about the new season and why these shows were chosen at this time. As far as Shining City is concerned, she explains the theme of the show and how the audience will find it accessible. Finally, I ask her what her directorial vision is for the actors and design elements of the show.

Shining City previews ($10) from September 19-21, and then officially opens on September 22. The show plays Wednesdays & Thursdays at 7:30 p.m. and Fridays & Saturdays at 8:15 p.m. for $15-25. Purchase tickets online or by calling 214-747-5515.

I recently attended a performance of Undermain's critically acclaimed urban ghost story "Shining City" by Irish playwright Conor McPherson. Terrific acting (despite pre-conceived doubts about Texas actors playing Irish roles), sharp directing by Katharine Owens, and the perfect setting for a ghost story made this production truly haunting.

Bruce DuBose was dead-on in the title role, most notably in an ambitious 30-minute monologue which should be one for the record books.

While you should be prepared to be spooked out of your seat, the real fright aspect of the play is the ghost that follows you out the door as you are forced to acknowledge your own demons.
