Texas Christian University 21, Southern Methodist University 7

— Despite dominating in nearly every statistical category, the SMU Mustangs still managed to find a way to lose Saturday night, as TCU managed to defeat the Mustangs 21-7. The Mustangs made ten more first downs, had a 12-minute advantage in time of possession and a hundred more yards of offense, yet could not score more than a single touchdown.

TCU's scoring came in spite of its inept offense, as the Horned Frogs got two unexpected touchdowns from a blocked punt and an interception returned for a touchdown. TCU also managed to score an actual offensive touchdown towards the end of the first half to ice the game at 21-7. No further scoring occurred at any point in the second half.

Of particular note was the ineffectiveness of TCU's quarterback rotation of Marcus Jackson and starter Andy Dalton. The two quarterbacks combined to go 11-for-26 for 108 yards and one touchdown. TCU also managed to fumble four times, losing two.

For all of TCU's faults, SMU was even worse. Three times, the Mustangs went for it on fourth down in TCU's 25 yard line, and failed. Starting quarterback Justin Willis went 19-for-34 for 203 yards, but was intercepted for a touchdown and sacked four times. Willis also ran 20 times for just 48 yards.

SMU's lone bright spot was running back DeMyron Martin, who carried 19 times for 101 yards, a Jim Brown-esque 5.3 yards-per-carry average. Martin also scored the Mustangs' lone touchdown, a 15 yard run in the first quarter that put SMU up 7-0 for their only lead of the game.
