IRVING Exxon Mobil Corporation announced today it will award $1 million to the Society of Exploration Geophysicists Foundation in support of the organization's mission to prepare students from around the world for careers in geophysics. That $1 million will go a long way towards buying whatever the heck this thing is
"ExxonMobil congratulates the Society of Exploration Geophysicists for its vision in providing valuable programs that encourage student participation in geophysics around the world," said Carlos Dengo, technical vice president, ExxonMobil Exploration Company. "These efforts are enormously important to our industry, where we foresee continued strong global demand for earth scientists."
SEG President Leon Thomsen said, "SEG has for seventy-seven years stood for professional excellence in the practice of applied geophysics in the search for natural resources. Increasingly this excellence requires that geophysicists closely integrate with related disciplines, particularly geology and reservoir engineering. The new SEG/ExxonMobil Education Program will help introduce students from around the world to the need for subsurface integration and to the exciting challenges of careers in applied geophysics today. On behalf of the SEG Foundation and the SEG, I thank ExxonMobil for making this opportunity possible for many of SEG's 7,000+ student members."
SEG, founded in 1930, fosters the expert and ethical practice of geophysics in the exploration and development of natural resources, in characterizing the near surface, and in mitigating earth hazards. The Society, which has more than 27,000 members in 130 countries, fulfills its mission through its publications, conferences, forums, Web sites, and educational opportunities.
