Irving’s Lee Elementary conducts surprise lockdown drill
On September 20, students and staff at Lee Elementary took part in a surprise lockdown drill conducted by Irving ISD security.
Maybe "took part" is a little light. In reality, a sudden voice came over the PA system demanding that teachers gather up their students and herd them into the hallways. District supervisors and resource officers moved amongst the teaming crowds of frightful children, corralling them like cattle.
After twenty frantic seconds, the hallways were cleared, the playground was evacuated, its swings creaking in a soft wind, classroom doors were locked with lights turned out, and window blinds were closed. Children bundled up against each other, cowering in the dark corners like kittens yearning for warmth, out of the line-of-sight from anyone in the hallway, out of breath as well.
“Our objective is to positively engage visitors to our campus and, when needed, take appropriate steps to shelter students and staff from harmful incidents. This drill was a resounding success,” said Pat Lamb, director of security and operations. “I look forward to conducting this training throughout our district.”
