— The 5th Annual World Championship Corny Dog Eating Competition goes down on Sunday at 1 p.m. at the State Fair of Texas, when 14 competitors will try to eat 12 Fletcher's corny dogs in 10 minutes. Consider yourself warned.

On a separate and completely unrelated note: If you hit the State Fair Web site (it's bigtex.com but don't hit it yet), you're subjected to pop-up ads. Pop-up ads. Pop-up ads that are completely unrelated to the State Fair and are there just to collect a few extra bucks. Doesn't that seem a little skeezy? I can see it with, say, a publication that actually draws its income from advertising. But the State Fair charges $14 to get in, and on top of that, the concessions cost $$ on their own. Whoever recommended to the State Fair people that they put pop-up ads on their Web site gave them bad advice and while there's no way to say precisely who gave them this advice, there is the fact that the State Fair's "food locator" map was done in conjunction with the Snooze.

UPDATE: And the winners are: Mike Wilkes and Brent Ricord, who tied for First Place, each consuming 12 corny dogs in 10 minutes. Wilkes lives in Krum and has attended the State Fair for more than 40 years; Ricord is from Keller and took Second Place last year. Runner-up Kurtis "the Drano from Plano" Wright ate 8 corny dogs.
