In their continuing effort to make the city greener, the City of Dallas will break ground on a new community garden at 7901 Goforth Road on Saturday, April 12 at 9:30 a.m. Councilman Jerry Allen, Assistant City Manager Jill Jordan, community members, volunteers and children will be hand to celebrate the groundbreaking.
As part of a national Keep America Beautiful and The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company initiative, the City of Dallas has been chosen as one of five cities nationwide to receive a grant to create a beautiful, healthy green space that can be enjoyed by all. Volunteers from the community and Keep Dallas Beautiful will work together to create a landscaped 12,000 sq ft area complete with flower beds, vegetables, shrubbery and a healthy lawn. Any food grown will be given to the North Texas Food Bank. In addition, gardening TV personality and master gardener Rebecca Kolls will be on site to offer expert gardening tips and will lead potting clinics for children to decorate and bring home a potted flower.

RE: "Any food grown will be given to the North Texas Food Bank."
This place is 5 blocks from me. I don't know what that quote above is all about, because the people that have the plots have them for a reason -- to grow food for themselves.

Is this an April Fool's joke? Scott's Miracle-Gro, that purveyor of poison and imbalance for our earth, as sponsor of "healthy green space?" Oy. In any case, Dallas has certainly had community gardens before this, including one right here in our neighborhood (near Royal and Greenville), that's all grown over with grass now.
