DFW’s best April theatre offerings
Step right up and get your tickets for the emotional rollercoaster that is April’s theatre offerings. The comedy highs are extra high like Broadway’s Best III with all the great songs from musicals and none of that pesky dialogue. But the drama lows are there, too, with shows like Bent, which explores gay life in Nazi Germany. Not even Prozac could make that subject cheery. For those more ambivalent about the happy/sad mood swing, try Marvin’s Room. Whether you end up with laugh lines, puffy cry-eyes or maybe a bit of both, you’re certain to be entertained.

The movie version of this estranged family reunion comedy/drama reads like a gay version of a “fantasy football” draft, boasting stars such as Meryl Streep, Diane Keaton, Cynthia Nixon, Gwen Verdon and Leonardo DiCaprio. The Dallas version may not have the same star power, but it does include Sue Loncar, wife of “Strong Arm” Texas lawyer and cable TV commercial star Brian Loncar. How’s that for celebrity A-list?

Okay, gay math test. Can you solve this equation? What does 2 hours + 12,000 show tunes x 24 jazz hands equal? If your answer is heaven, you’re right! The Repertory Company Theatre has pulled together a night of Broadway favorites all in one show. We have it on good authority that “everything’s coming up roses” (and if you don’t get that reference, it’s going to be a very long evening for you).

The folks at Uptown Players certainly know how to make us laugh, but they’re about to prove they can deliver the big guns and make us cry, too. Bent is the tale of gay persecution and the struggle for gay pride in Nazi Germany. Make sure to pack your tissues (and maybe a hunky shoulder to weep on) for this one.

It’s ahboot time this Canadian comedy team brought their funny back to Dallas. Who knows what wacky antics they’ll produce in the new show As Live As We’ll Ever Be. But if we can be granted only one wish, please, please, please let it be the Chicken Lady. There’s a little pee in our pants right now just thinking about how hard she makes us laugh.

Mae West once said, “Too much of a good thing is wonderful.” Perhaps she was talking about the onslaught of Beatles homages sweeping the nation. If Cirque Du Soleil’s Love or the film Across the Universe were your gateway drug into Beatlemania, then Rain is the equivalent of shooting-up the Fab Four’s goodness. You’ll be seeing “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” in no time.
