Rockwall County VIP (Volunteers Informed & Prepared) describes itself as a volunteer organization designed to support health and emergency services officials in the event of a widespread health emergency.
Organizers point to Hurricane Katrina as an event which demonstrated the limitations of federal government emergency response; their plan is to bring to bear a group of prepared local citizens to fill the gaps in officialdom's response to such a crisis.
Under the direction and guidance of the Rockwall County Judge, the County Public Health Coordinator and the County Sheriff’s Office, the VIPs stand ready to support in the event of emergencies within the County of Rockwall.
In case you're interested in supporting your community by becoming a Rockwall Country VIP, here are the sorts of needs they are looking to fill:
In the medical services area they want doctors, dentists, veterinarians, optometrists, chiropractors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, paramedics and EMTs, medical technicians, medical data clerks, administrators and other health care workers.
No medical skills? You may still be needed to assist medical experts by lending your expertise as interpreter, clerk, greeter and supply coordinator. Folks in these roles can help to create a strong support system that will enable medical teams to carry out their mission.
To volunteer for Rockwall County VIP, fill out the online application or email volunteers@rockwallcountytexas.com to request a physical form.

The Magnetic Fields Quartet led by songwriter Stephen Merritt is resolutely "indie" so how come their music has been used in a Volvo commercial and appeared in the film Lemony Snicket? More info
