Dallas County Commissioners extends funding for prisoner DNA review for two more years
They voted 3-1 to extend D.A. Craig Watkins' DNA evidence campaign.
The Dallas County commissioners gave a thumbs-up on Tuesday to District Attorney Craig Watkins' DNA evidence review team by approving funding for two more years.
The breakdown: $832,392 to pay two attorneys, an investigator, and a paralegal. The vote was 3-1, with the "1" being Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield; County Judge Jim Foster was absent.
If the commissioners hadn't voted for it, the DNA project would've lost a $457,600 grant from the Justice, Equality, Human Dignity, and Tolerance Foundation, which was willing to contribute only if the county extended its commitment. Another $36,000 is being added by the Innocence Project of Texas.
