First Texas branch of Gordon Biersch Brewery & Restaurant opens at Shops at Legacy in May
PLANO Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant will open its first Texas location on May 19 at the Shops of Legacy in Plano. Founded in 1988, with 24 restaurants in 16 states, Gordon Biersch serves American food and hand-crafted beers, with a menu that runs from burgers to sea bass.
But the thing here is BEER. Gordon Biersch adheres to the 500-year old German purity law Reinheitsgebot (Rine-HEIGHTS-ge-boat). Beers are made from only four ingredients: barley, hops, water, and yeast.
Gordon Biersch produces six authentic lagers on-site:
1. Golden Export. A smooth, refreshing lager, lightly hopped with a dry finish. The demand was so high when it was first brewed in the 1870s, that it was exported to other regions in Germany.
2. Hefeweizen. Once reserved for Bavarian royalty, this wheat beer has a light, sparkling quality. Wheat beers were considered breakfast or after-church beers, a testament to their crisp, refreshing flavor.
3. Czech Lager. A Bohemian-style pilsner. Golden hued, medium bodied, accented with a spicy character. Gold Medal winner at the 2004 Great American Beer Festival.
4. Märzen (Maert-zen). A dry, auburn-colored Bavarian lager with a mildly sweet finish. It was originally brewed in March (März in German) and stored in caves to be drunk during warmer weather.
5. Schwarzbier. Literally "black beer" in German. Schwarzbier has a fairly light body with a dry, roasted finish.
6. Seasonal. Each season Gordon Biersch offers a special beer to embrace the season and add a unique flavor and spirit.
Gordon Biersch was conceived in 1987, when sought-after brewer Dan Gordon met restaurateur and beer-lover Dean Biersch. They opened the first Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant in Palo Alto, Calif. in 1988.
Gordon graduated from the five-year brewing engineering program at Technical University of Munich at Weihenstephan, West Germany. Before earning his brewing engineer's degree there in 1987, he interned at Spaten Brewery in Munich and served as a technical translator at Lowenbrau Consulting.
In 1999, Big River Grille & Brewing Works purchased Gordon Biersch and founded the Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant Group. They've since opened branches in California, Hawaii, Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Washington, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Washington, DC and Virginia. General manager at the new Dallas branch is Jon Baker, who's worked with Gordon Biersch for nine years, most recently in Burbank, Calif.; Baker was born in Dallas.

Having been a patron at the Atlanta and San Francisco locations, I consider myself a fan of Gordon Biersch. The beers are fantastic, the food is great and the atmosphere is great for a friendly lunch, dinner out or even just for a few drinks. I like their bock and hefeweizen beers, though their blonde is my wife's favorite.
Glad to see they are opening a location so close to me and can't wait to get some garlic fries and a couple brews!
