April showers bring Dallas events aplenty

Spring is here. The birds are singing, and so are Aretha Franklin and the Pointer Sisters. The butterflies are flitting (to your garden if you plan ahead). The lesbians are migrating. And, the cheese is, well, stinking like it always does, but for purposes of our motif, we’ll just say it’s in “full bloom.” There’s no excuse not to get out and enjoy this week’s goodness.

Sue Ellen’s Last Blast

Friday, April 11

The times they are a changin’ and the lesbians they are a movin’. Sue Ellen’s is moving (just down the street) to 3014 Throckmorton. But before it does, they’re gonna party like it’s 1989 (when the bar first opened). For those of you too young to remember or so old you forgot, one of the music highlights of 1989 was the Milli Vanilli lip sync classic, “Girl I’m Gonna Miss You” – prophetic, huh. The party continues through April 13 and the new Sue Ellen’s opens to the public on April 17.

Hands-On Cheese Making Class

Saturday, April 12

Foodies of the world rejoice, you get to learn how to make Cheese Balls, Mozzarella Rolls and Queso Oaxaca. Plus you get a behind-the-scenes tour of The Mozzarella Company factory. But there is a catch. Doing this requires wearing waterproof, non-slip shoes, an apron and, gasp, a hairnet. As a reward for this fashion punishment the event ends with a wine and cheese tasting. We’ll stick to cutting the cheese and leave the making it to someone else. Cost: $75

Aretha Franklin

Wednesday, April 16, 8:00 p.m.

Long before there was Madonna, Mariah, Britney or Beyoncé, there was the mother of all divas – Aretha. And from her lungs did spring forth the sing-along-with-me-now anthem R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Don’t be a link in the chain of fools who don’t get tickets in advance. Tickets: $48 - $80, Nokia Theatre

Pointer Sisters and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra

April 18-20

Admit it – you’re so excited and you just can’t hide it. But remember, this time they’re playing with a symphony so that day-glow off-the-shoulder number you wore to their last concert is probably not appropriate this go-round. And that spikey Flock of Seagulls haircut, well, that never was good to begin with. Tickets $26 - $101, Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center

Butterfly Gardening Class

Saturday, April 12, 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Nothing is more butch than being out in nature, except when you are planting a frilly butterfly garden. But don’t let the heckling keep you from your true calling, Mr. Pretty Wings. Just put on a smile and your best gardening tiara – nothing can bring you down. Tickets: $22 ($20 for members), Dallas Arboretum

Todd Rundgren My college roommate and her boyfriend looooved Todd Rundgren. They used to say "Todd is God." A lot. Anyway, he's touring to promote his new album, a rocker called Arena. More info
