Dallas Black Dance Theatre to honor Nelson Mandela

DALLAS — At its Grand Opening Gala on April 18, 2008, Dallas Black Dance Theatre (DBDT) will present the Honorable Nelson Mandela with the prestigious World Impact Award for his commitment to his vision and for the profound effect he has had in our world.
DBDT's Gala Celebration, titled Committed to a Vision, recognizes the visionary Founder and Artistic Director of DBDT, Ann Williams, and the contributions to the lives of the over 1 million boys and girls and 2 million art patrons around the world that DBDT has reached over its 31-year history as well as the fulfillment of her dream to gain a permanent, state-of-the-art home for dance, fostering the growth and artistic development of the generations to come.
The Grand Opening Gala celebration will feature a concert by Patti LaBelle. The evening includes a Pre-Gala Celebrity and Business Community Reception welcoming the South African Ambassador and Ms. Patti LaBelle hosted by Texas State Representative and Honorary Consul General to South Africa in Texas, the Honorable Helen Giddings, guided historical tours of DBDT's new home, and a full-course seated dinner by celebrity chef Kent Rathbun of Abacus.
The 90-year-old Mandela is unable to receive the award personally, but will send South African Ambassador to the United States, Welile Nhlapo to receive the award on his behalf and a personal greeting and acceptance is expected via video from President Mandela.
