Groundbreaking ceremonies will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 12 for the new Lochwood Branch Library at 11221 Lochwood Blvd. When it opens the 19,500 square-foot library will replace the Casa View Branch Library, which has been in operation since 1964.

The new library will be a "green building," with energy efficient lighting and organic landscape materials. Like all new City of Dallas facilities over 10,000 square feet, Lochwood will be a Silver Rated Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design building, which means it will consume less energy and water, use recyclable materials and promote the use of renewable energy.

Other features will include a black box theater and public meeting space, classrooms, a 70,000-volume collection of books and media, 25 computers, 10 laptops and wireless internet access, self-checkout stations and easy access to DART.

Dallas City Council Member Sheffie Kadane, City Manager Mary K. Suhm, Director of Libraries Laurie Evans and Municipal Library Board Chair Suzanne Charriere will speak at the groundbreaking ceremony. The new library is expected to open in early 2009.

The Dallas Public Library operates the J. Erik Jonsson Central Library and 25 branch locations. A library card is free for any Dallas resident. For information on the many free programs and services available at the Dallas Public Library, go to http://dallaslibrary.org/home.htm.
