Email Print Tell us your story Comment

Howdy neighbor!

Whether you were weather-beaten, had your flight cancelled, or your candidate didn't advance past Tuesday's runoff race, it's been a bit rough this week in north Texas. Thanks for turning to us for the news of our community (delivered with a Texas accent, of course).

Ways we're currently bribing you to spend more time with us

There are two ways to enter our contest to win tickets to Radiohead's sold-out Dallas concert in May. We've also got great seats for Brave Combo at the Main Street Arts Fest in Fort Worth. Local bands have a chance to play for a captive audience and get a free music video of their performance. Meanwhile, entrepreneurs and business owners can quaff and nosh for free at Cork while learning how to market your business online from Mike Orren. This week we awarded a great package to Bowl Full of Blues. Sign up for The Daily You to increase your chances of winning other cool UnContests. With new promotions added throughout the week, we hope you'll check back daily!

Metro

American Airlines voluntarily canceled more than 1,000 flights, and Teresa Gubbins reports on AA CEO Gerard Arpey's excuses -- or rather, explanation -- for the problems. Despite low turnout, Tuesday runoffs decided who will lead the GOP's efforts to recapture Dallas County leadership. In Tarrant County, incumbent constables held on to theirnominations. Another GOP race (for district judge) was decided by a mere 20 votes. Meanwhile severe weather Wednesday night resulted in power outages, building damage, school closings, and limb-severing.

Flix

From the "AFI Dallas last gasp department" comes a review of Crawford and an interview with that film's director, David Modigliani. His documentary tells the story of the small Texas town that was (sort of) adopted by George W. and (sort of) invaded by Cindy Sheehan and her attendant army of war protesters. Also stemming from AFI is an account of Robert De Niro's appearance at the screening of his (and Barry Levinson's) movie, What Just Happened; a slideshow from the fest-closing show put on by Polyphonic Spree at the House of Blues; photo coverage of a red carpet at the Angelika; an interview with local short filmmaker (or should we say "maker of a film short") Scott Hanson; and a review of the movie Pageant by The Column's John Garcia. With one film fest over, another one (the USA Film Fest) stands waiting in the wings. They've announced their schedule, and we've got the events input so you can easily access them and plan out your agenda for gourmet film viewing. Film guy John also gives a brief overview. Almost lost amidst the hubbub were reviews of two films debuting in regular release, The Ruins and Leatherheads.
