Plano-based Frito-Lay offering low-salt versions of its chips

PepsiCo's Frito-Lay North America business unit has launched Pinch of Salt, a low-sodium version of Lay's potato chips, Tostitos, Fritos, and Ruffles. The Pinch of Salt product line contains 75 mg of sodium per one ounce serving and is rolling out as we speak. Depending on which product, it'll have 30 to 50 percent less salt than the originals.

There's more to this press release but it's almost too gobble-dee-gooky to make fun of. Like: "The Pinch of Salt product line fits strategically within Frito-Lay's health and wellness portfolio, which provides consumers a variety of options that fit into a healthier lifestyle."

Also some hokum about the "salt on the surface of the chip" versus "the salt cooked within", an assertion that Frito-Lay's "core portfolio of snack chips" has "much less sodium than we think," and a dietician saying we need to "manage" our salt intake. Jeepers, if we were doing that, we wouldn't eat the chips at all.

Wow - a "core portfolio of snack chips." Did that come with a PowerPoint slide, too?
