— The Dallas Mavericks beat a quality team for the third time in four tries Thursday night, clinching a playoff spot and their 50th win in a 97-94 effort at the AAC. The win guarantees the Mavericks a chance at their first title, and at 50-29 they are a full two games ahead of the Denver Nuggets for the seventh seed in the talent-packed Western Conference.

The game literally came down to the final second, when, after Utah tied the game at 94 with a miraculous three, Dirk Nowitzki ran down the court and banked in a three point shot of his own for the win with less than a second left on the clock. Dirk finished with 32 points on 12-of-23 shooting, yet was nearly wide-open for the game winner.

Jason Terry added 21 points for the Mavs, who lost Josh Howard in the third quarter to an apparent knee injury. Howard injured it initially running into Shaquille O'Neal earlier in the Phoenix victory, then re-aggravated it in the first half against the Jazz. Howard will reportedly sit out the next two road games in preparation for the first round of the playoffs.

Jason Kidd had a quiet game, finishing with just 7 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists, but also contributed just one turnover in 35 minutes. Brandon Bass provided some pop off the bench, putting up 14 points in just 16 minutes.
