Scalpers at Mary J. Blige/Jay Z concert in Dallas on April 12 appear doomed to crappy night

— On April 8, Live Nation sent out a chipper email/press release announcing that tickets for the Jay-Z / Mary J. Blige "Heart of the City" tour on April 12 at Superpagesdotcom Center were "still available and on sale now". These are tickets that went on sale February 28.

In the same release, Live Nation bragged that "7 out of 8 dates on this tour have sold out." However, those dates have averaged 12,000 people each; "Superpages" has 18,000+ seats. (When queried about how many tickets to the Dallas show had sold, Live Nation did not respond.)

Plenty of prime seats remained available (and on sale now!) on Friday April 10. At 9 p.m., a buyer could get two tickets to Section 100 -- Row K, Seats 17-18, to be precise -- for $150 each. (Section 100 is in the most forward section, but slightly off to the right of the stage.) Top-tier $250 tickets were available in singles only and mid-range $79.95 tickets were gone, but there was no shortage of $39.95 lawn seats.

It benefits Live Nation to crow about this show. The company, which lost nearly $12 million in 2007, just agreed to a sucker's deal with Jay-Z, offering the has-been an idiotic $150 million for "virtually every aspect" of his output. Good luck with that as his SECOND-most recent album, 2006's Kingdom Come virtually tanked.

Despite all the amazing sales Live Nation touts, Jay-Z and Mary J made an excruciatingly uncomfortable appearance on David Letterman on April 4 to promote the tour. Jay-Z pulled the low-class move of darting ahead of Mary J so he could sit in the chair right next to Letterman, then slumped down and spent the entire time dissing R. Kelly.

Despite Live Nation's undying admiration for Jay-Z, the Ticketmaster Web site for this show depicts Mary J. Blige only, whose August 2000 date at the same venue came close to selling out. She was touring solo that time.

Couple of notes on this: A major reason tickets aren't selling is because they are way overpriced. Second, Kingdom Come was crap but his last record was actually American Gangster which is one of his best in years. Jay-Z is good but he's not the Rolling Stones. They need to price accordingly.

xdavidwattsx, thanks for the note - album reference is fixed. for some reason, I thought American Gangster was a soundtrack thing. (Never got it myself, obviously.) And I'm seeing now that it had "great commercial success". So that pretty much obliterates any point I was making - har. You sure are right about price with tickets as high as $250. Appreciate your input

OK, so here's how it actually went down:

I had an extra pair of tickets that I had to virtually give away after I couldn't even find someone to pay face value and craiglist was littered with desperate souls like myself so I fully expected this show to be empty.

Shockingly, the place ended up being packed. I'm not going to say sold out but the seats had to be close to 95 percent full and the lawn had to be 75 percent full. I'm not sure where all of these people came up with this money or if there was some sort of free ticket faucet that I missed out on but the place was full and they were pumped for Mary J and Jay Z. I couldn't believe it.

I'd say each artist go tan equal amount of love from the audience. There were a lot of females there showing there love for Mary J especially during her biggest hits like Real Love and when she opened with Can't Knock the Hustle and Jay-Z was on stage.

Jay-Z had the crowd rolling with Roc Boys and 99 Problems and they finished the show when Mary J came back out and did a great version of Heart of the City.

So yeah, I guess there is a reason Jay Z is filthy rich after all.

xdavidwattsx, awesome follow-up/concert review. i've heard promoters say that, out of all genres of music, R&B and hip-hop shows had the highest number of last-minute 'walk-up' ticket sales. proven true here one more time

last night had to be a beautiful night for an outdoor show...

I heard rumor that K104 and some of the stations ended up with a bunch of free tickets t give away at the last minute. Word of mouth does travel fast on things like that, but I can't verify it was true. Just what I heard.

I'm still convinced the show was overpriced, but at the end of the day the seats were full and crowd was pumped.

On to see Bruce Springsteen tonight.

Here's my question: will there be anyone else in the city of Dallas (who isn't a reporter) at both Jay-Z/Blige and Springsteen?

This was such a false report. There was not a huge amount of "free" tickets for this show. Iwant to know what's wrong with Mary & Jay putting a value on what has been long and successful careers (ticket price). I've seen rock show tickets going for more than $250 on numerous occasions. It was beautiful to see these artists tour together and not have beef. I saw the interview with David Letterman and Jay was just having a little fun at the expense of R.Kelly. It was really all Letterman wanted to discuss anyway from my viewpoint. On another note it was a great show, the masses stayed until the end and was worth the price of the ticket. My 2cents.
