Austin City Limits Festival releases 2008 lineup

Since ACL 2007's stellar lineup featuring Byork, Bob Dylan, Muse, and other huge bands, fans have been patiently awaiting the 2008 lineup. Well, it's finally out and could provide some elation to those of us who had a rough tax day. Topping the list of heavy hitters for this year's festival are the Foo Fighters, Robert Plant and Allison Krauss, Beck, Manu Chao, John Fogerty, David Byrne, The Raconteurs, The Mars Volta and Gnarls Barkley. DFW gets some representation on the lineup with Erykah Badu, Bavu Blakes, Eli Young Band, and The Strange Boys.

Early Bird and Advance 3-day passes sold out months ago, but Regular 3-day passes are still available for $170. From there, single day passes will be released, and once those are sold out, your best options will be eBay and Craigslist.

On the local roots front, don't forget <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/bands/strange-boys/">The Strange Boys</a>.

Hmm, definitely not worth $200 and standing in the sweltering heat for 3 days.

IIRC, Five Times August is also local.

Ive been to ACLMF for two years straight, this is the best lineup so far, and unfortunately, im not going to be able to go due to my honeymoon. Why cant anyone around here get together and put on a decent, big headliner festival like this in the spring or fall? We have Fair Park for 11 months out of the year and room for at least 4-5 stages to be used, In addition to tons of room for decent consessions (i.e. decent local eateries) and places for people to hang out and relax. Plus, once the dart line goes live, you have a decent way of getting to the show.

Robert Kelly, says:

Not bloody likely Chris. The city of Dallas would never do something like this. Lets take for example the AVP Cuervo Gold Crown Dallas Open this weekend in ARLINGTON. Hey, remember when the volleyball tournament was in downtown Dallas? This city can't hold onto the events that fall into it's lap, much less bring in or develop new ones.

Chris Kidd, says:

I do remember that robert, Same with Hoop It Up moving to the ballpark as well, Dallas has been totally stupid when it comes to keeping around decent events. A real urban city wants to keep around festivals, street fairs and outdoor concerts. It seems our friends in Cowtown get this and have learned to capitalize on both their location and downtown area. Why the "City Fathers" of Dallas havent gotten wise to this is beyond me

Yeah, nothing like 1000's of sweaty aging metalheads who barely bathe converging on one place to see ozzy hobble on stage.

Erin Rice, says:

Actually, to view the headlining bands for last year's Ozzfest you got to stand on a lawn or sit in seats in the Smirnoff/Superpages amphitheater. To go out and see some of the opening bands, then you were in the parking lot. Did it mention where Ozzfest would be this year? I can't seem to find that speculation. I'm presuming it would be at Superpages again.

chrisdanger: don't forget vomiting in there. I saw tons of aging, vomiting metalheads <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/news/2007/aug/03/ozzfest-2007-review-photo-gallery-included/">last year</a>.

Mike Orren, says:

My wink was silent on that one. Not my idea of a good time either.

Maybe imposing my own tastes here, but in my mind, this is a nearly ideal lineup both in terms of good music and crowd draws. If Memphis can do this, why can't Dallas?:

Chris Kidd, says:

Mike, this is an interesting lineup, something for the whole family to see, similar to ACLMF. The Lower card acts (BDS, Buddy Guy, Charlie Musselwhite, Cat Power) are about the same as the festival and are pretty dang decent on their own.

One thing that has always gotten me about Dallas is its lack of real love for local talent, all people here want is big name nationals or oldie but goodie acts, case in point Ozzfest. Ive lost all faith in my fellow Dallasites because of their sheer idiocracy when it comes to things like this.

kevinh, says:

More profit and less risk in competing cities is probably why Dallas doesn't see big music festivals. The last one I remember was Blockbuster's Rockfest at the Texas Motor Speedway (not actually in Dallas)

We like to focus on tasks that involve construction contracts here in Big D !!

Rick Yost, says:

Mike- Something like this could happen in Dallas if someone could be found willing to invest for the risk.
We see some of the 'big' names listed (with photos) come through our town from time to time. Also listed was Buddy Guy's who's coming in May. Watermelon Slim will be at our club in May, and Lil'Ed and the Blues Imperials in June, so it's not like you can't get good national acts to visit our area.

Considering the great turn out Bowl Full of Blues in Plano received, I think the crowd is out there. They're just waiting for a show.

Robert Kelly, says:

That is a sweet lineup Mike. Except for Michael McDonald. Who the hell does he have the goods on in Memphis?

And speaking on good music, we have the great Nick Lowe in town tomorrow nite at the Sons. Support the cool people that come to Dallas, they are 2 few and far between.

Chris Kidd, says:

Im in agreement, most of the decent acts have been run out due to many things, including lack of decent performance venues and clueless promoters, which this area has more than its fair share of. In addition, why hasnt one in Dallas City Government stepped up and made contact with C3(Promoters of Lollapalooza, ACL and Cochella) about setting up a decent sized 2 day festival in the springtime??

Neff Conner, says:

Fer sher, there are lots of great acts on the ACL bill. Most of whom have played in DFW/d in the past year or two. Hopefully, they'll make stops in our area before/after the ACL, so we can enjoy their performances in more pleasant environs.

Hey, Zilker Park is pretty dang decent, esp. at the end of september. Plus even if it gets warm, theres Barton Springs right behind you to cool off in and decent shade as well.

I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that there's no shortage of festivals about:

http://www.pegasusnews.com/events/sea...

But I would like to see a goodly-sized festival a la' ACL around here. Been preaching it for some time:

http://www.pegasusnews.com/blogs/notm...

Don't know how far I'll get, but I'll ask the C3 folk for their POV the next time we speak to them.

Meantime, Rick, I'll see you for the Watermelon Slim gig.

Mike, Id really like to know why, seeing we have the facilities here to do it and the availability of a site especially in spring, when touring/festival season starts.

Austin City Limits Festival has now released the list of official 2008 Aftershows:

Aftershows feature artists from the ACL lineup playing additional gigs at smaller Austin venues including Emo's, Stubb's BBQ, and the Paramount Theatre. Some of the artists participating are Manu Chao, Gnarls Barkley, Conor Oberst, and Jakob Dylan.

I didn't go see the Butthole Surfers in DC because I couldn't afford the airfare and hotel, so I'm pretty glad they're playing closer to home.
