Ongoing at Southern Methodist University residence halls is a recycling competition that began on April 11. And starting on Wed., April 16, a range of other earth-friendly activities are coming into play during the university's designated Earth Week, leading up to Earth Day on April 22.
Beginning on April 16 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., at the West Bridge Table in Hughes-Trigg Student Center, there'll be a display board incorporating Earth Day advertising and a sign-up sheet for public outreach events and raffle tickets. From 5 - 7 p.m., campus sustainability activist (wow, what a cool designator!) Rachel Barge will provide training for student environmental leaders in 153 Heroy Hall.
This does not depict the delivery of the low-flow showerheads to SMU-in-Taos, but it was kind of an evocative photo so we posted it anyway.
On Saturday, April 19th there'll be a couple of community service opportunities, to wit: tree planting with the Texas Trees Foundation, from 8 a.m. 'til noon at the Richland College TXU Urban Tree Farm, 12800 Abrams Road. (Participants will want to wear old shoes and clothing in anticipation of getting extremely dirty. They are also encouraged to bring gardening gloves and a water bottle and to wear sunscreen.) The other opportunity comes via a cleanup of White Rock Lake through the auspices of the For the Love of the Lake folks. (Participants in this service activity are encouraged to wear old shoes and clothes, wear sunscreen and bring along snacks, water, trash bags and pick up sticks.)
Finally, on Earth Day (April 22) on the Hughes-Trigg Commons from 10 a.m. 'til 3 p.m., there will be informational tables, free food and games, t-shirts and showerheads (of the low-flow variety, I'm guessing). SMU Vice President Chris Casey will speak at 12:15 on the topic of SMU's Earth-friendly policy and planning, and will follow up with a Q/A session.
You'll have fun, fun, fun, 'til your daddy takes the SUV away.
