Dallas artist Frances Bagley wins award at 10th Kajima Sculpture Exhibition in Tokyo

Bagley is the first American to win an award in this competition. Hellz yeah.

Frances Bagley, an artist living and working in Dallas, has won one of the five awards given in the 10th Kajima Sculpture Exhibition held in Tokyo every two years. She is the only American to have ever won an award in this exhibition. Out of approximately 300 entries from 20 countries, only 10 maquette submissions were chosen to receive a subsidy to build their sculpture in large scale. Juror, Yoshio Taniquchi, designer of the new MOMA in New York, was particularly supportive of Bagley’s work. Frances Bagley’s sculpture Absence/Presence will be exhibited in The KI Building in Tokyo for two years, her maquette will be exhibited in Osaka at the Asto Hall (Izumiotsu-shi, Osaka) through May 8, 2008.

The show is sponsored by the Kajima Corporation, a well known architecture and engineering firm in Japan. Under the theme of ‘Sculpture, Architecture and Space’ Kajima Corporation aims at creating new spaces where sculpture and architecture meet, thus, activating the space provided in new and dynamic ways.

Frances Bagley has exhibited extensively in her career, her work is included in several museum and corporate collections, such as The National Museum of Women in Washington D.C., The El Paso Museum, and American Airlines, among others. Her awards include, the Individual Artist Grant from the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation and a Legend Award from the Dallas Visual Art Center (now the Dallas Center for Contemporary Art). She has been involved in numerous public art projects, and recently, collaborated with her husband, artist Tom Orr, to create sets and costumes for Verdi’s Nabucco, which opened Dallas Opera’s 50th anniversary season.
