The Texas Rangers snatched defeat from the jaws of victory Sunday afternoon, blowing a late five-run lead en route to a disappointing 6-5 loss in Boston's apparently-cursed Fenway Park. The Rangers dropped to 7-12 on the season, one game above the catastrophic Detroit Tigers for worst record in the American League.
The Rangers were running along just swimmingly until the bottom of the seventh inning. Leading 5-0 at that point, starter Kevin Millwood lost his shutout bid to a pair of RBI singles. Bad went to worse in the bottom of the eighth, when relievers Wes Littleton and C.J. Wilson combined to give up 4 runs off a series of singles, walks and throwing errors.
It was Wilson's first blown save all year, first runs allowed and first loss. Wilson is now 0-1 with five saves and a 2.25 ERA.
Millwood had a good game against the Red Sox's lethal lineup, going six innings and giving up just the two runs off ten hits. Millwood walked two and struck out seven.
The Rangers were staked to their big lead by a three-run home run in the sixth from Milton Bradley. Michael Young went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Josh Hamilton went 1-for-4 with a run, but had the costly throwing error in the bottom of the eighth that led to the winning runs.
