Just a reminder that Texas Christian University's Center for Civic Literacy is hosting author Ishmael Beah this Thursday (April 24) for a talk on his book, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier (nominated for a Quill Award in 2007).
Following the death of his family, Mr. Beah - at the age of 13 - was forced to become a soldier in his native Sierra Leone.
Since writing the memoir, Beah has spoken at both the United Nations and the Global Young Leaders Conference (in 2007). He currently works for Human Rights Watch and resides in Brooklyn, NY.
The talk will be held at the D.J. Kelly Alumni Center on the TCU campus at 7:30 p.m. General admission is free, but you may reserve both parking and seating at the cost of $20/person.
For more information, contact Karen Anisman, assoc. dir. of the Center for Civic Literacy, at 817-257-5004, or by email at k.anisman@tcu.edu.

I read this book last month and it was amazing. Beah tells his story from his relative perspective at each stage, and he's incredibly effective at detailing the motivations and derived thoughts of those around him. Such a moving memoir. I rarely would endorse a single book to all people, but in this case, I think anyone and everyone over a certain minimum age can and should read it.
