UTD Polykarp Kusch Lecture Series features geophysicist

George McMechan will talk about 3-D imaging of Earth's energy resources

George McMechan is director of the University of Texas at Dallas Center for Lithospheric Studies, which of course gets him all the hot (geothermal) babes, but he's trying to stay humble about the whole thing.

On Wed., April 23, Prof. McMechan will hold forth on the topic of "3-D Imaging of Earth’s Energy Resources.” (Which - if I were involved - might have been subtitled, "Or at least what's left of them." But, as usual, my involvement in this and other academically-sanctioned processes has been less than minimal.)

McMechan's areas of expertise are in wave field transformations and innovative data processing technology, which adds enormously (and at precisely measurable levels) to his raconteur troubadour cachet. His research has focused (with laser-like intensity) on "the development and implementation of new algorithms for numerical simulation of scalar, acoustic, elastic, viscoelastic, anisotropic and poroelastic media and their corresponding imaging and inversion procedures." (Schwing!)

McMechan's talk begins at 11 a.m. in the School of Management's Davidson Auditorium (SOM 1.118), and - like all Kusch lectures - this one is free and open to the public. For additional information, phone 972-883-2272, and no matter who answers, you must give the password - "ROSEBUD" - before proceeding with your line of inquiry.
