While the members of renegade Mormon sect Yearning For Zion get their DNA tested to figure out who's related to who, some of the children are being shipped to temporary foster care around the state, including the Presbyterian Home in Waxahachie and a Catholic Charities facility in Tarrant County. The DNA testing is expected to take at least a month.

Akira Sato Jazz trumpeter Akira Sato, by way of Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, Canada, is an SMU faculty member and director of The Meadow Jazz Orchestra at SMU. He is also an adjunct faculty member at UNT where he teaches jazz arranging. Sato is also heading into the studio soon with other area musicians and playing at the Scat Jazz Lounge tonight. With all that he's up to, the least you could do is order a Scotch on the rocks and chill to some tunes. (Photo by flickr user arteunporro. More info

This story has had a fishy smell since day one ...IMNSHO ...It's always reeked of a Katrina/Waco mix of government-mission.
Tonight I saw a story on WFAA that there was no 16 year old girl calling about abuse. Whether we will ever get the whole story remains to be seen, but if history is any "go-by"...much will remain hidden.
I hate that the kids are being taken away from their families. Sounds too much like the "Katrina method" in use again ...

Folks are concerned about these kids being separated from their mothers, and ordinarily I would agree. But since to a degree the mothers were complicit in the goings on in the compound, it might be good for them to be apart from the entire situation for a bit.
Kids are inevitably effected by what adults do. Even those who say they mean well.

The raid was based on a hoax. Why did they go into the compound with combat gear and combat-type equipment without checking into the facts that have now surfaced... and fairly quickly... after the fact? Aren't we only hearing the one side? Aren't possibly hundreds assumed guilty by association and by "what might happen sometime in the future". Can everyone be taken into government custody simply becasue of some possible violation that could possibly happen sometime in the future?
Again, IMO this entire event just does not pass the sniff test.

I'm one to look for the silver lining and found it interesting (as a parent who homeschooled two of my three children at various times) that the state acknowledged that the children were likely somewhat ahead academically and made homeschooling a condition of their placements in foster homes. In this decision they also acknowledged the reality of bullying in public schools.

Well sure, you wouldn't want them to be subjected to all of those "your moms" jokes would you?

I sincerely hope teachers wouldn't announce to the class "it be one a 'dem crazy Mormon kids from out west!". And surely the kid wouldn't run around whining about how many daddies it misses.
Then again, they are offspring of renegade polygamists.

Aside from all the humor, I DO worry about what will happen to the kids. But then, worrying about what will happen to the kids just leads to a bigger, more convoluted subject: Now that we've 'saved' them from one form of brain-washing, mind-controlling, abusive adult propaganda...which form of brain-washing, mind-controlling, abusive adult propaganda do we introduce them to?
It does seem inevitable.

If anyone thinks for a moment that these children will be "better off/safer" in Texas Foster Care perhaps they should do some investigating into the abuse of children WHILE IN FOSTER CARE!
I did ... and found that while Gov. Perry continues to hide reports/data on foster care abuse, we do have recorded data on: Medicaid prescription drug fraud, deaths, poisonings, rapes and pregnancies of children in the state's foster care system.
Did you know? If you compare the number of deaths of children in Texas to the number of deaths in TX foster care system, a child is 4 times more likely to die in our state's foster care system!
Did you know? In ONE year (2004 data from HHSC) about 100 children received treatment for poisoning from medications, that 63 received medical treatment for rape that occurred WHILE IN THE FOSTER CARE system, and that 142 children gave birth WHILE IN FOSTER CARE!
Did you know? Many children are in more abusive situations NOW than they were before the state intervened.
Did you know that psychotropic drugs are being prescribed to children as young as 3 years old in the foster care system, even though the drugs are not approved for children?
If THESE are things we know, can you imagine what the state continues to hide?

Clay,
In case you've not been reading past your accusations, what this was actually begun on was exposed as a hoax. Can you understand that "for the locals like Sheriff Doran and Judge Walther, IMO the real purpose of the raid was never to investigate child abuse but to run the YFZ Ranch residents flat out of the region."? ...
(However, it may all have backfired on them. Since folks are forced to stay at the ranch rather than return to Arizona, it's possible others will now come to join them since they can't leave. Apparently they have already ordered hundreds of new voting cards. Don't you think the next local elections will be interesting?)
...Running them out of the area seemingly was openly discussed, included suggestions that the entire ranch's assets be seized to pay for this CPS overreaching fiasco.
Thank you Texas Supreme Court and 3rd Court of Appeals, but this is far from settled. Perhaps an entire new group of local officials will be in place by the time it is.
As stated, this was NEVER about the safety of the children anymore than the illegal war/occupation was about bringing freedom to the people of Iraq.

Apparently, this is about parents in families where there is no allegation of abuse, DC.
"This could be the beginning of a chain of events that could actually shut down CPS' investigation into families where there's no allegation of abuse, whereas the Supreme Court's ruling merely sent the kids home but allowed the investigation to continue."

Since you have your statistical hat on; Do you have any data on the suicide/drug/alcohol related deaths of children and adults raised in similar cults? It is a cult after all. We have seen this occur time and time again. You would think we could have come up with a better way of dealing with this issue by now.
There is just no winning for the government in a situation like this. Either we turn a blind eye and allow something awful to continue, or we go in, muck it all up and then have listen to armchair politicians tell us how we mucked it all up.
I just find it hard to believe that there is some evil genius in office somewhere dreaming up ways to terrorize poor, unsuspecting people. You don’t see us messing with the Amish just because they are different and wear funny dresses. But then they don’t lobotomize their women and take advantage of children.

Well, obviously I have not been playing connect the random dots trying to figure out how many different ways people on this planet are conspiring against me. Mostly just believing that the majority are a lot like me – Just doing the best they can with what they have.
So take a deep breath, take down the tin foil and relax for a minute. Not every wound is intentional - or personal for that matter.

Hmmmm...you can't be talking to me, I haven't had a statistical hat since I left it someplace in Dallas back in the early '80s probably.
Aren't all modern religions a form of "cult"? There has most likely been MORE documented abuse by members/clergy of the Baptist group than this one. And we won't even bring up all those Catholic Priests.
If you are wanting to compare numbers, be sure and include all - including the above - in fairness.
There are deviates in every religion, cult, neighborhood. Are you saying everyone belonging to these groups is guilty? That is what you are implying for the YFZ group.
The State overstepped its boundries whether it was a devious plot or whether it was local bias or plain stupidity...or 2 out of 3.
Once again, this group was set-up. The government is not the victim. Don't ask me why any group is chosen or not chosen for harrassment. There is plenty of information out there available to research so you can settle your questions, however.

Yes, I’m saying anyone and everyone who knew of abuse was absolutely responsible for failing to intercede – in any religion.
Wow – Now we know there is at least one computer in Zion. That explains A LOT!!!

Clay,
This is getting hilarious on hand and ridiculous on the other. You ask me if I know anything about this group and what'sherface accuses me of BEING there.
I'm not defending what these people might believe nor am I deciding just how many "joined just to break the law".
They have not been proven to have broken any laws by simply BEING THERE. The government came in like Blackwater troops, the group was set up from the beginning of this 'staged event'. This was wrong. This has to be rectified without infringing upon the civil/legal rights of the innocent. The government can't make up rules as they go, like it or not. Only the King can do that....and the last I looked there was no king involved.

Sorry, no answers here- just talkin'!
I personally don't have the time or energy to delve deep enough into all of the current carnival-like clusters unfolding in the world today. I doubt many of us do.
This is a particularly dicey circus act.
I do agree with Kay that there's something really wrong with how this whole scene went down. I must admit, being a discounter of all religious groups and gatherings on general principle, this was at first simply amusing to me.
It wasn't that long ago that a thirteen or fourteen year old girl getting married and becoming pregnant was fairly common especially in the rural areas of this country.
However, if the letter of the law is not followed, then the law is worthless.
If there was evidence of illegal activities, then YFZ should be held accountable. But if as Kay says, there were no laws broken, then it could be the start of trouble for a lot of parents in this country.
I'm not trying to defend the YFZ, I think they're a bunch of loons. But as most of us can see, the greasy hand of government is steadily reaching into our homes and our lives.
Since we all know there is no separation between chuch and State, it doesn't take a Nostradamus to see how this could evolve. I don't want the CPS to declare that me allowing my children to decide for themselves about the subject of 'religion' is inappropriate and take them from me.
You DO see how a law written for one situation does spread to other situations- don't you?
It's called precedent.

I thought the big deal was arranged marriages between minor females and much older dudes? Lots of teen pregnancies, etc, indicate they're making the sex...probably with adult guys since it's a polygamist sect.
Pavel is likely very interested in the outcome of this. If they can do it, why can't he?

Rick - I do understand your point but I truly believe that the checks and balances we have in place will keep the government from getting too out of hand. I am not at all trying to discount your POV but what troubles me is that groups like NAMBLA try to use the same sort of reasoning to justify their cause. To me, they are far, far more scary than the government.
