The Public Adminstration Society names Addison’s City Manager the Texas Public Adminstrator of the Year
The North Texas Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration named Addison City Manager Ron Whitehead North Texas Public Administrator of the Year. The award was presented at the organization’s annual conference on March 28 by Dr, Abraham David Benavides, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Administration, University of North Texas.
Award recipients must have made sustained contributions to the profession of public administration, demonstrated a commitment to excellence as evidenced by successful leadership and accomplishment and must exemplify the highest standard of public service. Mr. Whitehead joins such prominent government leaders as William Pitstick, Mary Suhm, Tom Vandergriff, George Schrader and Dr. Ron Anderson as the 34th recipient of the award.
In making the presentation Dr. Benavides said, “We often neglect to recognize and honor our public servants because they blend into the fabric of the public interest. As most of us in the profession know, the life expectancy of a city manager in any one community is between 4 to 6 years. Ron’s ability to move between politics and administration is an art he has obviously mastered during his 26 year career with the Town of Addison.”
The Orange, TX native earned his BS degree from Lamar University and began his career in municipal government in 1971 in the personnel department of the City of Beaumont. He moved to Irving in 1974 as administrative assistant to the city manager, later serving as assistant city manager, supervising a number of city departments. He moved to Addison in 1982 as city manager. Throughout his career, he has mentored and guided students, interns and young professionals to help them develop the necessary skills and knowledge to be successful in public administration.
