The Catholic Foundation awards $676,000 in grants to Dallas-area schools

— The Catholic Foundation announced today that it has awarded $676,365 in grants to Dallas-area schools and organizations serving the local Diocesan community. The numerous initiatives made possible by these grants help serve schoolchildren, the elderly, parishioners, refugees and more. The grants were announced and presented during a spring granting ceremony held at Santa Clara of Assisi Parish on April 23.

The grants were made from the unrestricted endowment of The Catholic Foundation ($594,925) and the restricted funds of The Catholic Foundation ($81,440), which included the Emma Louise Buhrer Endowment Fund ($25,000), the Jane and Henry Neuhoff Fund ($19,400), the Senior Citizens Fund ($30,000) and the R. Cardis & Grace Delee Stubbs Fund ($7,040).

“The Catholic Foundation exists to support the important spiritual, educational and charitable efforts of our local Catholic community, and we do so by encouraging compassionate charitable giving to further serve the community’s needs,” said Edwin M. Schaffler, president and chief executive officer of The Catholic Foundation. “We are thankful to the many contributors who have enabled us to provide these organizations with over $676,000 in funds to continue their service and outreach.”

The grants are given to organizations that demonstrate their ability to meet the physical and spiritual needs of the Catholic community. Recipients will use the grants to assist with a variety of needs, such as technology updates in schools, refugee outreach, parish construction projects, and ESL programs.

The following are recipients of The Catholic Foundation’s 2008 Spring Grants from unrestricted funds:

BISHOP DUNNE CATHOLIC SCHOOL - $44,000: Update the fire monitoring system

THE HIGHLANDS SCHOOL - $35,000: Improvement of access road and parking lot

HOLY FAMILY OF NAZARETH PARISH - $45,000: Replace HVAC system and restroom renovations

JOHN PAUL II HIGH SCHOOL - $25,000: Redesign Web site to include alumni component

LA PROMESA FOUNDATION/GUADALUPE RADIO NETWORK - $20,000: Update broadcasting equipment

LITERACY INSTRUCTION FOR TEXAS (LIFT) - $10,925: ESL for two parishes

NOTRE DAME SCHOOL - $10,000: Update computers & software

THE PINES CATHOLIC CAMP - $25,000: Master plan for campgrounds

SACRED HEART OF JESUS CHINESE PARISH - $40,000: Construction of multi-purpose building to include a parish hall & rectory

ST. AUGUSTINE CATHOLIC SCHOOL - $60,000: Replace roof and floor in gym

ST. ELIZABETH CATHOLIC SCHOOL – $35,000: Update technology labs

ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI CATHOLIC CHURCH (Lancaster) - $10,000: Assistance with clerestory windows for new chapel

ST. JOHN CATHOLIC SCHOOL (Ennis) - $20,000: Update computer lab

ST. MARY’S PARISH (Sherman) - $45,000: Pews for St. Anne’s Church

ST. MONICA SCHOOL - $30,000: Update middle school science labs

ST. PAUL THE APOSTLE SCHOOL - $30,000: Outdoor pavilion and benches

ST. THOMAS AQUINAS SCHOOL - $25,000: Renovation of Upper School restrooms

UNIVERSITY OF DALLAS – $25,000: Replacement of laboratory exhaust fans

URSULINE ACADEMY - $50,000: Construction of Science, Math & Technology Center

VITAE CARING FOUNDATION - $10,000: Support of pro-life TV ad campaign in DFW Market

The following grants were made possible through restricted funds.

WORK OF HEART PROGRAM - $25,000: Catholic School Award Program for Fall Semester 2008

ST. PATRICK CHURCH - $16,400: Refugee outreach program

Funded through Jane and Henry Neuhoff Fund

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL THRIFT STORE - $3,000: Purchase truck

Funded through Jane and Henry Neuhoff Fund

DIOCESAN MINISTRY TO PERSONS W/DISABILITIES - $30,000: Automatic door openers in selected parishes

Funded through Senior Citizens Fund

CATHOLIC CHARITIES - $1,422.74: Veterans’ assistance

Funded through R. Cardis and Grace Delee Stubbs Foundation

GRAND PRAIRIE WELLNESS CENTER - $5,617.63: Technology and training plan

Funded through R. Cardis and Grace Delee Stubbs Foundation

Akira Sato Jazz trumpeter Akira Sato, by way of Tokyo, Japan and Vancouver, Canada, is an SMU faculty member and director of The Meadow Jazz Orchestra at SMU. He is also an adjunct faculty member at UNT where he teaches jazz arranging. Sato is also heading into the studio soon with other area musicians and playing at the Scat Jazz Lounge tonight.
