Dallas ISD observes Cinco de Mayo
Eight schools will host activities and programs

DALLAS The Dallas Independent School District schools will host programs and activities for students, parents, staff, and community members to observe Cinco de Mayo.
Cinco de Mayo marks the victory of the Mexican Army over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Although the Mexican Army was eventually defeated, the "Batalla de Puebla" came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism.
Some of the events scheduled at Dallas ISD schools are:
- Stephen C. Foster Elementary School, 3700 Clover Lane, will hold a Fiesta Celebration, Friday, May 9, at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. The program will include songs, dances, and instrumentals done by K-5th grade students.
- Edna Rowe Elementary School, 4918 Hovenkamp Drive, is hosting a 5 de Mayo in our School program. A parent will sing Tex-Mex with his group. A Folklorico dance will be performed by the school’s dance group. There will be a Ballet Folklorico by second grade students and teachers performing. Parents will bring Mexican food to the staff to help them learn more about the Mexican American culture. This will take place on May 5, from 1:45 p.m. to 3 p.m.
- Edwin J. Kiest Elementary School, 2611 Healey, will have four shows on May 2; one at 9 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., with the Anita Martinez Folklorico and Kiest Elementary students. Also, on May 5 there will be an art contest.
- Lorenzo de Zavala Elementary School, 3214 N. Winnetka, will have a potluck lunch on Friday, May 9 and staff will dress in traditional dress. The PTA program on Monday, May 12, will have a special presentation on “Gangs” before student’s Cinco de Mayo dances for grades Pre K-5, from 6 to 8 p.m.
- L. G. Pinkston High School, 2200 Dennison Street, on Monday, May 5 beginning at 2:45 p.m., will host the 5 de Mayo Program. Pinkston’s Ballet Folklorico AZTLAN will perform dances from the state of Guerrero and showcase costumes from Jalisco, Veracruz, Chiapas, as well as from Guerrero. There will also be a poetic reading, a mixture of modern dance and a 5 de Mayo art contest.
- E. H. Cary Middle School, 3978 Killion Drive, on Monday, May 5, at 1 p.m., is having as guest speaker a celebrated regional novelist, Irene Beltran Hernandez, author of The Secret of Two Brothers, a novel set in West Dallas. Beltran Hernandez will discuss her novel and the challenges students face.
- Edward Titche Elementary School, 9560 Highfield Drive, will sponsor a "Mexican History Through the Ages" program with songs and dances representing the cultural changes over time. The event will be held on Wednesday, May 7, at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
- Central Elementary School, 902 Shady Lane, will have performances by the Folklorico dancers from Kleberg Elementary School. The staff at Central Elementary will celebrate with a lunch prepared by parents. The event will take place on Monday, May 5 at 9:15 a.m.
