Gay List Daily’s August theater recommendations

It’s ladies night (and the feeling’s right) for North Texas theatre. Whether you’ve got a thing for naughty nuns with a penchant for folk guitar or just want to sip a mint julep and drink in all of Blanche DuBois’ catty banter, you’re set. Just make sure to watch out for those vixens from Island Zero, that damned Yankee Lola or the women of Nine. Kitty’s got claws, and she knows how to scratch!

Blanche Out: A Streetcar Named Desire

August 8 – 31

Okay everybody, on the count of three: STEEELLLLAAAAAAAA! Now that we’ve got that out of our system, let’s move on. Get ready for genteel southern sass like only Tennessee Williams could write. Really, who hasn’t used the line “I have always depended on the kindness of strangers” to get out of a speeding ticket, to get a date or maybe even to get a free oil change?

Tickets: $27 - $32; Contemporary Theatre of Dallas; www.contemporarytheatreofdallas.com

Nice Edelweiss: The Sound of Music

August 7 – 17

For centuries, scholars have debated, “How do you solve a problem like Maria?” We don’t know either, but keep her away from the curtains before she goes all Project Runway again. It’s sure to be an evening of do-re-mi’s and ’mos-fo-sho.

Tickets: $10 - $15; Studio B Performing Arts Center; www.studiobtheater.info

Livin’ La Vida Lola: Damn Yankees

August 12 -17

Talk about a bait and switch, we were originally promised casting with La Bamba Papi Lou Diamond Phillips, but due to a “busy professional career” (hmm, Surreal Life 8? Celebrity Fit Club?), he dropped out and we got Richard Kind in the role of Satan incarnate. It’s like ordering the spicy enchilada plate and finding out they use canned Hormel chili – filling, but not as tasty. Nonetheless, we’ll be front row lip-synching along to “Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets.”

Tickets: $40 - $69; Casa Mañana Theatre; www.casamanana.org

So Simple, Even a Cavegirl Can Do It: Atomic Cavegirls of Island Zero

Through August 23

An island of beautiful women showing off their monster side, no it’s not “The Hills goes to Hawaii,” it’s just another popcorn tosser from Pocket Sandwich Theatre. Find out what happens when the first manned flight to planet Jupiter goes awry and lands right in the middle of campyville. We hear animal prints are very en vogue for those summering on Island Zero.

Tickets: $10 - $18; Pocket Sandwich Theatre; www.pocketsandwich.com

When 8 ½ Just Won’t Do: Nine

Through August 9

Based on Fellini’s film 8 ½, Nine follows director Guido Contini as he struggles with lady troubles and a mid-life crisis. A movie version is already in the works with big star names buzzing about like Kidman, Day-Lewis, Hudson and, uh, Fergie? See it now, and then remind everyone what a trendsetter you were.

Tickets: $15 - $18; Irving Art Center’s Dupree Theater; www.irvingtheatre.org
