Fort Worth Cats 10, Shreveport Sports 6
Charles Carter had three hits and three runs batted in on Monday night as the Fort Worth Cats downed Shreveport 10-6 at Fair Grounds Field.
The Cats jumped on the board early as they scored three times in the first inning. Nelson Teilon's RBI single scored Ed Montague to give the Cats a 1-0 lead. They added two more in the first as Carter singled home Jake Gautreau and Teilon came into score on an error.
The Sports scored a run in the third inning on an RBI single by Bobby Bratton to narrow the Cats lead to 3-1.
But the Cats broke the game open in the fifth inning as they scored four times. In the fifth, Brian Fryer led off with a bunt single, Ed Montague struck out and then Gautreau singled home a run for a 4-1 Cats lead. Two batters later, Charles Carter delivered an RBI single and Ken Lup followed with a run-scoring double for a 7-1 Cats lead.
Shreveport, however, showing no quit in them, responded by scoring four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth to narrow the lead to 7-5.
The Cats then scored three times in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Gautreau and back-to-back RBI singles by John Allen and Carter for a 10-5 lead.
After the Sports scored a run in the last of the sixth, they were held scoreless the rest of the way. Joel Kirsten, the Cats' starter, wound up going six innings and permitting four earned runs on 10 hits to notch his seventh win of the season. Kyle Yates and Tim Haines combined to finish the game with three scoreless innings in relief.
Bert Snow (1-10) took the loss for Shreveport as he allowed 10 runs on 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.
The series concludes on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. Dan Grybash will go for the Cats and will be opposed by Shreveport southpaw Justin Phillips.
