— Dr. Erica Frank, president of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning organization Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), will join Dallas Peace Center volunteers for a memorial vigil Wednesday morning. This week marks 63 years since the U.S. dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima (August 6) and Nagasaki (August 9).

The bombs immediately killed about 120,000 people and injured and poisoned millions more. Today we are at the precipice of more nuclear destruction, as the Bush Administration seriously considers war with Iran. The threat of war persists despite a notable lack of evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

A standing vigil of remembrance for the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will take place at Ferris Plaza, 450 S. Houston St., on Wednesday, August 6 from 7 to 9 a.m. Dr. Frank will be introduced by Dallas Peace Center Director Lon Burnam and issue a statement after the vigil.

PSR won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985 for “spreading authoritative information and by creating an awareness of the catastrophic consequences of atomic warfare."

A statement issued by the organization asserts, “Threatening Iran with a military attack only increased tension in U.S.-Iranian relations and increases the possibility of war…Furthermore, an attack on Iran would likely plunge the entire Middle East into further chaos and violence, disrupting public health services and putting the well-being of thousands more civilians at risk.”

Dr. Frank is visiting Dallas as part of the Dallas Peace Center’s Summer Dinner Lecture Series. She will speak on Wednesday, August 6, at FunAsia, 1210 E. Beltline Rd. in Richardson. Reception starts at 6, dinner at 7 and the lecture at 8 p.m. Tickets are still available for $50 at www.dallaspeacecenter.org. Call 214-823-7793 for more information.
