Jenny the elephant may stay an American citizen
Wow, civic discourse can actually work: A group of protesters went to the Dallas City Council meeting Wednesday to let their feelings be known about Jenny the elephant's fate, and the council agreed that the Dallas Zoo should come up with a plan other than sending Jenny to the Africam Safari Park in Mexico.
Congrats, elephant protesters -- remember to always use your power for good, not evil.

i think it's also promising to see that the dallas city council listens to what people have to say and responds nimbly. for the most part, the council comes off as genuinely interested in doing the right thing. i sure don't feel that way about state and national elected officials

This is good news, but I wouldn't be celebrating just yet. The mayor still said it could take ANOTHER MONTH to look into OTHER facilities, so there is still no gaurantee Jenny will go to the Tennessee Sanctuary where she belongs. Apparently, the council thinks they need to find a facility that has the Association of Zoos and Aquariums accreditation, even though this organization has done nothing in the past to protect elephants when proven cases of abuse and neglect have surfaced. This poor animal is becoming more and more depressed due to no other elephant companionship since February, so I can't believe the council just won't admit they were wrong and send her to the sanctuary already, before it's too late.

I think it is a rather sorry outcome when people with little or no knowledge of the animal are allowed to make a decision because of some noisey crowds and a habitually activist council member. This wasn't civil discourse, and it had nothing to do with the welfare of the animal involved

Yes, the Dallas City Council did listen, but so far there is no indication at all they are leaning toward making the decision we are asking for. Too often public officials will make a great show of listening to the public, and then they go off and do something entirely different. In a democracy, if the elected officials do something that is different from what the citizens ask for, the officials must give a sound reason for their decision. The only reason we have been given is that "the officials at the zoo are experts, and they know what is best." Sorry, that's not good enough! If you want to help, please go to the web site concernedcitizensforjenny.net; there you will find everything you need to know to add your voice to this issue.

Any chance we could get Lily Tomlin to weigh in on where we should put John Wiley Price?
