Far East Dallas convenience store owner says he is chucking it in after two robberies in 24-hours
According to an email from Hank Gaines of Gaines Real Estate, his convenience store tenant at 8300 La Prada has had enough:
The owner of the convenience store was robbed last night and again this morning. He has indicated he is going out of business. The crime is intensifying at the center due to the jobless Katrina refugees living in the surrounding apartments. I will contact the police and keep you further informed.
This shopping center serves an apartment-heavy neighborhood as well as nearby Eastfield College.

Not saying this store was targeted pre-katrina, but there has been a huge increase of crime due to a decent number of the Lower Ward Katrina Crackheads moving into the area. Thats a fact even most honest beat cops will tell you as well. In fact, im going to bet you dollars to donuts that these are the same group responsible for alot of these ATM smash/grabs and copper thefts in the area as well. I had it described to me in this way: The rats escaped the sinking ship and made it ashore. They brought their diseases along with them from their home port (crime, poverty, stupidity) and have infected the places where they reside. The only thing that will fix this problem is more cats hunting the rats.
If there is a flipside to this coin, there are quite a few former NOLA residents who have sucessfully intergrated into D/FW. They have brought their soul, flavor and identity to the area and made it a much richer place to live. Those people, of all stripes, should be applauded and thanked for their contributions to our everyday lives.
