Rowlett increasing garbage collection fees

— Similar to the rest of the country, Rowlett is feeling the crunch of higher fuel charges and residents will soon see those increased charges reflected in their garbage collection costs.

Beginning immediately, garbage collection in Rowlett will increase on an average of $.66 more per month per garbage container after Council took action in June to pass the collection contractor’s increase to the customer.

IESI, the City’s garbage collection contractor, said increased fuel prices have forced them into requesting this increase, which is allowed in their contract with the City. Any future increases or decreases in the fuel surcharge from IESI Corporation will be reflected accordingly on subsequent bills.

The rate will vary per customer depending on the size of the polycart trash receptacle and frequency in which their trash is collected. Most residential customer’s fee will only be $.66 since the majority of our customers only have one trash receptacle. The rates will be higher for the commercial customers.

“It’s important to note that these rates are subject to change at the discretion of IESI,” said Brian Funderburk, Director of Finance & Administration. “While not anticipated, it’s possible that these rates could change monthly.”

IESI Corporation, Inc. submitted a request to increase the fuel surcharge in May and after research, staff recommended accepting the adjusted rates and passing the increase on to the customer.
