DART considering charging for parking

4

Just a week after announcing that they won't be raising their fares anytime soon, DART seems to have taken away some of the goodwill by saying that plans to charge riders for parking are under consideration. No decision is imminent, however, and DART's budget for 2009 does not include parking fees -- yet.

An alternative to charging everybody for parking would be to only charge commuters coming from communities that don't belong to DART, an option favored by some DART board members and riders. Um, pray tell, how exactly does one identify someone who lives in Allen or McKinney? Is it their haughty attitude or the way they style their hair? I, for one, being a regular DART rider, am frustrated to see the broad swath of land near the Bush Turnpike station remain unoccupied when the solution -- turning it into a parking lot -- seems to be as plain as day. But what do I know?

Empty space or DART parking lot -- which would be better?

alex, you find this empty swath of land frustrating because there is a shortage of parking spaces at the bush turnpike station?

Spotting the McKinney and Allen folks is easier than you might think Alex, but you have to be willing to sacrifice a little personal space to read the small tatooed model numbers under the back collar where the size tags and washing instructions usually are.

There is some validity to the Allen and McKinney complaints. Said cities don't contribute tax monies to transportation but want their residents to use it. Not sure how that is accomplished but those selfish cities need to pony up now that's they've realized their lack of foresight affects their transportation options.

I suppose they can contribute like the rest of the member cities.
