UPDATED: City of Parker plans postpones reschedules parade for Olympic champ Nastia Liukin

City of Parker

With a name like Nastia, she has to be good

No surprise here:

Thanks to Nastia Liukin's stellar performance in the all-around women's gymnastic event (and, not incidentally, her capture of the gold medal), her home town (by residence) of Parker is planning a parade in her honor.

No route or timing have been determined as of yet, but the date has been set for next Saturday, Aug. 23.

When details are known they'll be posted on the City of Parker website, and - of course - here on PegNews.

In related Nastia Liukin coverage, it seems girls at the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy in Plano (where Nastia trains) stayed up late a couple nights watching their cohort on her path to gold medaldom. Friday morning they even got to talk with Nastia on the phone.

UPDATE: Nastia's parade has been postponed due to the vast quantity of recent rain in the area - per Vicky Granger of the City of Parker's administrative office. However, the Olympic champ is returning to North Texas (via DFW Airport) on Thurs., Aug. 21 as planned, and there's sure to be a slew of folks showing up at the airport to welcome her.

YET ANOTHER UPDATE: The City of Parker has now rescheduled the parade for Sat., August 30 at 9:00 a.m. Staging will occur from 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. at Victory Church.

Apparently it's a normal affair to send flowers to Olympic Gymnasts to honor their accomplishments. Nastia issued a press release Monday asking that well-wishers donate that money instead:

"She [Liukin] would be honored if they would make a donation of similar value to their favorite charity in her name."

The release goes on to mention UNICEF and World Vision as two reputable charities. FYI for all those attending the parade on the 23rd.

Is Shawn gonna be at the parade, too, or are they holding one in her hometown soon as well?

No reason, Brett.

For the record, she'll be 17 soon enough (<a href="http://www.nbcolympics.com/athletes/athlete=619/bio/">January of '09</a>).
