2. Announcements/Reminders/News:

a. Update on Gary Penny: I spoke to Gary on Monday and he sounds great. You may recall that he was involved in a vehicle accident over the weekend of 8/9. His injuries were more serious than I indicated last week. He was not hospitalized right away but he did go to Garland Baylor on Sunday 8/10. When the extent of possible injuries became known he was sent to Parkland Trauma Center where he stayed until Tuesday 8/12. Gary was diagnosed with a bruised aorta, concussion and bruised hip. He was pretty well banged up but very fortunate that his injuries were not more serious and that surgery was not required. He is still resting at home and has not gone back to work yet - although he did go over to Garland Square last Saturday (Gary didn't have to explain this to his boss - he works for himself !). Please keep Gary and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

b. The Southwest Bluegrass Club announces two upcoming events:

1. Fall Picnic: Saturday, October 18th from 11:00 a.m. until dusk at Trawick Pavillion located in Oak Grove Park on Lake Grapevine. Covered pavillion seats 260 people and has two open air grills with plenty of space for jamming. For directions, click on this link: http://www.ci.grapevine.tx.us:80/IndividualDepartments/ParksandRecreation/RentalFacilities/tabid/435/Default.aspx scroll down until Trawick Pavillion is displayed then click on "get directions". More details will follow.

2. Annual Christnas Dinner & Concert: will be held on Sunday, December 21st at the Holy Trinity Catholic School in Grapevine, the same location we've used for the past two years. More details later.

c. (Repeat) The club's application to join the Kroger Neighbor to Neighbor Program has been approved. We are now members of this program for the current period which ends April 30, 2009. You can help the club earn a percentage of Kroger's donations to the program by using your Kroger Plus Card whenever you make purchases at Kroger. Please print the attached "Kroger Customer Letter/SWBC Bar Code", take it to Kroger on your next visit, join the Kroger Plus Card program if not already a member and have the Kroger customer service desk or cashier scan your Kroger Plus Card and the bar code on the form so that subsequent purchases you make with your Kroger Plus Card can benefit the club. If you are not yet a member of the Kroger Plus Card program, joining is easy. Applications are available at any Kroger cashier or at the customer service desk. Membership in the Southwest Bluegrass Club is not a prerequisite for this program. If you are not a member of the club, you can still help us out by joining the Kroger program. Please be aware that the program states: "if the Kroger Plus Card is not presented during a transaction, your organization's account will not be credited". Merely giving the cashier your phone number may avail you of any Kroger Plus discounts but your purchase will not benefit the club so please remember to use your Kroger Plus Card whenever you shop at Kroger. In addition, some items you may purchase are "ineligible purchases", excluded by law and will not be credited toward the program. These include: alcohol, tobacco, pharmacy. postage stamps, gift cards/certificates, lottery/promotional tickets, fuel, sales tax and other items.

e. (Repeat) Southwest Bluegrass Club announcement:

The board of directors of the Southwest Bluegrass Club is considering the possibility of moving our meeting place to a location that better suits the needs of the membership. We are looking for a place that is close to the club’s demographic center (approximately the intersection of Hwy 183 and Hwy 360), has seating room for a larger audience (approximately 200-300), has adequate acoustics and stage, has separate rooms to accommodate jams and workshops as well as the regular meetings and is affordable to the club. All members are encouraged to help in the search for a new meeting place. If you are aware of a location that may suit the club, please contact Paul Stimson (817 929-8391, stimsonpaul@sbcglobal.net ) or Ed Flynn (817 275-3104, txflynn@tx.rr.com )

We are continuing to look - we've seen a number of potential venues, none of which we feel will meet our needs

Upcoming Workshops & Camps:

Howdy flatpickers -

We wanted to let you know about a special workshop opportunity that has just come up. Guitarist Tim May has offered to come to Houston for a flatpicking workshop and concert on September 20, 2008. Tim is one of the bright lights of the bluegrass world, having worked in Nashville area for more than 20 years as a sideman, session player, band member and performer. Tim's accomplishments are too numerous to mention, but during the past few years he has toured with Patty Loveless, played on Rounder Records' all-star project "Moody Bluegrass", recorded projects with Charlie Daniels, Brad Davis and Cody Kilby, and appeared on the cover of Flatpicking Guitar Magazine.

The workshop is sponsored by the Bay Area Bluegrass Association, and will take place at BABA's regular show space at the Jonny Arofolo Civic Center, 300 W. Walker Street, League City Texas. Tim will kick things off at 1 p.m., and the workshop will last for about four hours. Cost for the workshop will be $60 per person, paid at the time of the workshop. Following the workshop, Tim will appear on stage for a solo performance during BABA's monthly show, starting around 7 p.m. No deposit is necessary, but please shoot us an e-mail so we can reserve your seat.

One final item, we've got an great series of workshops lined up for January 2009. Orrin Star is coming to town for four workshops on both flatpicking guitar and mandolin. Orrin is an award-winning guitarist and mandolin player who combines hot picking, cool singing, and good humor. Once described as "Arlo Guthrie meets Doc Watson", he was the 1976 National Flatpicking Champion, has appeared on A Prarie Home Companion, and has a repertoire that ranges from bluegrass standards to little-known folk gems, Celtic fiddle tunes, to fingerstyle blues. Orrin will be presenting four workshops (two on flatpicked guitar and two on mandolin) Friday evening through Sunday during the weekend of January 16, 2009. Because Orrin values the ability to work closely with a small number of participants, we will have a tight limit on space of about a dozen participants per session. We will send out a detailed e-mail later this year, but if you'd like more information or to secure your places early, please feel free to get in touch with Joe Dodson at joe.dodson@yahoo.com or by phone at 713-880-5991.
