Here is the lineup for 2008-2009:
- Dream Awake, a new thriller by Mark-Brian Sonna. World premiere. From October 16 – November 1 2008. A court appointed psychologist is assigned to determine the sanity of a babysitter who is being charged with brutally murdering two children. Since the young woman has no recollection of the shocking event, to facilitate remembrance, the psychologist places her under hypnosis. The crime she proceeds to describe confirms her involvement in the brutal murder but not of the two children she's accused of but of two others. The mystery deepens as the young girl proceeds to reveal more details of this new crime and the police are unable to locate the victims. Is her recollection faulty? Has the psychologist inadvertently created a false memory thus making an innocent person now guilty? Or is the girl actually a serial killer caught? Thrill as the mystery unravels and you discover if her memories are part of a dream or if they happen while she was awake.
- The Beulaville Baptist Book Club Presents: A Bur-less-Q Nutcracker!, by Mark-Brian Sonna. From November 28 - December 20, 2008. BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!!! If you missed it last year, here’s your chance to catch it! If you did see it, you know you’ll want to see it again! This play by Mark-Brian Sonna broke all attendance & box office records & garnered a Column Award nomination for “Best New Play of the Year”. Are you tired of the typical Holiday shows? Come check ours out! The women of the Beulaville Baptist Book Club are in dire straits financially, and as a last ditch attempt to save their book club they decide to do a fundraiser and hire the Beaumont Ballet to perform Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker”. Madge’s Piña Colada Casserole unfortunately sickens the entire cast with food poisoning and they are unable to perform. Luckily, there is another dance troop in town. It seems the Velvet Kittens Burlesque Dancers are stuck in Beulaville because their van broke down on their way to New Orleans. Madge has never heard of Burlesque, or as she pronounces it “Bur-less-Q”, and in an act of necessity hires the dance troupe to do “The Nutcracker”. The end result? The most original, unusual, and comical Nutcracker you've ever seen!
- A New Drama, by Tamayo y Baus. New Translation. From January 29 - February 14, 2009. Love. Passion. Deception. Murder. Set in Shakespeare's globe theatre, a troupe of actors is preparing to perform a new drama. What they don't know is that the new play mirrors their lives. As relationships form and illicit love affairs bloom they soon discover that the play they are rehearsing will reveal their secrets. Can they overcome the inevitable conclusion of the play or will a new ending be created? Thrill at what is considered by many as the play that gave birth to modern theatre. It broke all conventions of it's time and to this day it remains one of the most passionate and exciting dramas ever written. It will leave you breathless. We will have a special Valentine's show with chocolates and roses.
- Oedipus Rex, by Sophocles. New Translation. From March 30 - April 25, 2009. Oedipus Rex has fascinated audiences for millennia. This play tells the story of Oedipus and his quest to discover the cause for the plague affecting Thebes. His search leads him to a series of revelations, each more horrific then the next culminating in the most intense and disturbing ending of any play ever written. This new translation by Ian Johnston is dynamic, yet doesn’t loose sight of the beauty of Sophocles’ poetry while at the same time making it accessible to modern audiences. Mr. Johnston has been interviewed on NPR about his work as a Greek scholar and translator and we are thrilled to be able to present this seminal new translation. He has received countless accolades for his work and we are pleased to be the first company he’s granted permission to mount a production of his new translation.
- Adam & Eve in the Garden of Delights, or Love, a wicked comedy by Alejandro de la Costa. World Premiere. From May 28 - June 13, 2009. The original war of the sexes. We all know the story of Adam and Eve, the apple and the snake. What if the snake were a person, and not just any person, but a hunk of a man with no morals whose main purpose is to seduce either Adam or Eve? This religiously incorrect retelling of what happened in the Garden of Eden is outrageous, scandalous, and oh so sexy. For mature audiences only due to sexual situations, general misbehaviour, and nudity.
- John XII, by Mark-Brian Sonna. World Premiere. From July 9 - August 1, 2009. Few people know of Octavius, later renamed John XII, but he was one of the most influential men to have ever lived. He was a lover of women and men, and he was appointed Pope at the age of 18. Beloved by the world, hated by emperors, the Vatican supressed until recently the truth of their most controversial leader. His affairs both carnal and political are interwoven to dramatize the riddle of what eventually lead be his death at 26. Was he a devil or a saint? You decide. This play contains adult language, sexual situations, and nudity.

John XII is a brilliant ensemble play about a forgotten period in history which I saw on its opening night, flawlessly done. The actors are uniformally perfect, the play written in a style that allows the history of the events to be put in context. My wife and I really loved this play. The actors pull you right into the action and events, Hancock as John is slick as the manipulator and yet ambiguous, Wickersham as Adalbert is beautifully addlebrained as a lover then bitter in revenge ( his seduction by John is a fun scene), Swanner an oily bulletheaded gossip and enemy (and source of all history's info on John), Adams an effective sexy outraged lover, Hinson a very impressive Otto (be really looked the part), and Hathaway a perfect scheming Berengarius (he reminds me of a Dr. House). Loved them all. The ending was very effective. I strongly recommend this play.
