UPDATE: Bus crashes near Dallas Zoo
Okay, the efforts to rescue Jenny the elephant are getting a bit extreme: A charter bus crashed near the Dallas Zoo Wednesday night after the driver told passengers that the gas pedal got stuck. Several people suffered minor injuries in the crash or in their attempt to escape the bus.
UPDATE: The bus's brakes weren't working properly.

Had that happen in my car before - gas pedal got stuck under my floor mat. Scary stuff. Also, pretty sure that took about 6 mos off my brake pads. =( But at least I didn't randomly ram into things!

Uh, why not shift to neutral and coast. Or just kill the engine, flip the hazard lights and wait for the cavalry. Rather jack up the transmission than try to steer an out of control bus on the service road of all places.

Scott Doyle, says:
Depends on what transmission you normally drive, imo (apparently it's not uncommon for charter buses to be automatic).
Peeps who drive a standard everyday would probably instinctively shift to neutral and pull over as you're coasting. However, when a car is red-lining under its own power, everyday driver of an automatic hits the brakes without thinking twice.
I held the brake for a couple of seconds and had already started to pull over while holding the brake before neutral entered my mind. All the things running through your frightened brain interfere with the obvious.
