Theater Spotlight of the Week: Jerry Russell
Interview w/ Jerry Russell, Founder of Stage West & Director of The Long Christmas Ride Home
It's about time I got chance to feature Jerry Russell. Not only is he a prominent actor in the DFW theatre community, but an acclaimed director, as well as a founder and producing director for Stage West. Plus, he is directing their latest show The Long Christmas Ride Home, an innovative piece using live actors along with Bunraku puppets.
We start by talking about his career and what brought him to the DFW theater community. I ask how Stage West was founded, and since it has been around for quite some time, I ask what attributes to its success.
Since he is also really well-known as an actor, I ask if he has a preference of acting or directing.

We move on to The Long Christmas Ride Home, and I question why the company is performing a "Christmas play" in August. He talks about what sets it apart from a holiday show and its appeal. He talks about what attracted him to this show.
Since it uses dance, Japanese puppetry, live theatre, and multimedia, we discuss the challenges he faced as a director and how this is a highpoint in his directorial career. I end the interview by asking what he wants the audience to walk with.
The Long Christmas Ride Home runs from August 21 - September 14 and tickets can be purchased online or by calling 817-784-9378.
