City of Irving confirms human case of West Nile; makes suggestions for avoiding further ones

Those nasty little bloodsuckers can be nastier than you might think.

This is the sort of bloke that might actually thumb his left feeler at DEET - and any move he makes would fall under the category of "significant mosquito activity."

This is the sort of bloke that might actually thumb his left feeler at DEET - and any move he makes would fall under the category of "significant mosquito activity."

On Thursday (Aug. 21), the City of Irving confirmed that they'd diagnosed their first human case of West Nile virus of the season.

The 63-year-old man who contracted the disease lives near Oak Meadow Dr. in the 75061 zip code; the area was sprayed on the same evening the diagnosis was confirmed in an effort to kill a slew of mosquitoes.

As a precaution, the city is reminding folks to be careful when engaging in outdoor activities during the dusk and dawn hours, when mosquitoes are most active; dress in long pants and long-sleeved shirts when spending time outdoors; use DEET-based insect repellents; and be sure to drain any outside containers that might be holding water, including bird baths (which they recommend that you drain and refill at least twice weekly).

If you're experiencing "significant mosquito activity" (?), you may feel free to report same to the city's "mosquito hot line" at 972-721-3755.

Let's be careful out there, folks.
