— The Texas Rangers were no match for the surging Cleveland Indians Sunday night, dropping their third straight game 4-3 at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The loss was the 14th in the Rangers last 17 games, and Texas fell to 63-68 on the season.

The Rangers had not been five games below .500 since early May, when they were the laughingstock of the American League. Unlike most of their 68 losses, however, this one couldn't be pinned on the pitching.

Rangers starter Vicente Padilla pitched decently, going just five innings but giving up only three runs. Padilla terrorized the Indians at the plate, walking one while striking out eight. He was relieved by four relievers who gave Cleveland absolutely nothing until the top of the ninth, when closer Eddie Guardado gave up the game-winning run on a single up the middle.

The fading Rangers didn't have much pop at the plate Sunday night, collecting just seven hits --six of them singles-- and six walks. A hobbled Milton Bradley led the Rangers with two hits and an RBI.
