Because we know you're going to knock off early for the Labor Day weekend, we're dropping the newsletter on you a little early this week. While we're still on the hunt for a new managing editor, you're stuck with this newsletter's original author for a bit -- I'm out of practice, so please be gentle,
Metro: Seems like the whole world was fixated on Denver for the DNC this week -- Our pal Shawn Williams has been posting live from the convention floor throughout. Meantime, the Dallas County sheriff's race is shaping up to make McCain/Obama look like a lovefest, even with one of our own local billionaires in the middle of that fight. And Bill Baumbach of The Collin County Observer will leave you ready for a new election for commissioners. (Still, Plano is the most affluent city in the country ... Our content partner Dallas iMedia (who has helped us bring you lots of great video) is facing a crisis due to proposed budget cuts and could use some moral support. Meantime, Brian Allen of Great Southwest Citizen says Duncanville has budget problems of its own ... [Insert regular "suburb considering pit bull law" story here] ... Minnie had a sitdown with longtime Allen Mayor Steve Terrell.
Stage: Jocelyn Wiebe, director of Collected Stories, is in the Theater spotlight with Shawn ... Local productions of The Big Bang and Streetcar got rave reviews ... Check in on Friday for the week's openings and closings.
Flix: The Film Guy was on the red carpet for locally-produced actioner, Exit Speed ... A Dallas team is in the finals of a big movie competition ... Check in tomorrow for reviews of films opening this weekend.
Film, food & fun!

Addison -- Arlington -- Dallas -- Lewisville -- Plano
Music: The long-awaited Jackopierce reunion album snuck out early. Hopefully Fair to Midland will follow suit with the album they're starting on now ... Todd caught some old-school metal at the "Metal Masters" tour.
Best Bites: Want a new location for your restaurant? Go Fish ... Is Rowlett the center of the Mango-loving world? ... Spiral Diner is looking for veggie votes again ... The war on HFCS continues unabated. Like that matters to people gearing up for chicken-fried bacon (Mmmm.... Baaacoon.)
Sports: The Boys are wrapping the preseason, with Texas Stadium's farewell tour of duty underway ... The Rangers haven't been impressive in the past week, although they did bring us some Hamburger ... Euless Trinity enters the football season ranked number one in the nation.
Schools: Schools are back in session, no matter what color your belt may be ... SMU's geothermal lab got a big gift from our favorite search engine.
Bidness: Look, we're Apple fans and all, but lining up for the opening of a new store in FW? Of course, waiting in line for nothing is more productive than looking for a parking space at Snider Plaza at lunch ... Are you pretty enough to work at Abercrombie & Fitch?

GWAR / Kingdom of Sorrow / Toxic Holocaust Only lead singer Oderus Urungus (aka Dave Brockie) has stuck around since GWAR's start 23 years ago, but the huge costumes, raunchy and obscene lyrics, and fluids spraying into the audience are sure to be on full display as the metal band makes its return to Dallas.
