FORT WORTH TCU tailback Joseph Turner has been named by the Guaranty Bank SMU Forum as an official candidate for the 2008 Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation's top collegiate running back.
A junior from Austin, Texas, Turner was selected by his teammates as TCU's Offensive Most Valuable Player last season. He topped the Horned Frogs with 597 yards rushing and six touchdowns on a 5.2 per carry average.
In the regular-season finale at San Diego State, Turner was named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 226 yards and four touchdowns on 33 carries. It was the 14th-best single-game effort in TCU history and the most yards by a Frog since Lonta Hobbs ran for 287 against Memphis in 2002. The four scores tied for the third-best single-game rushing touchdown total at TCU.
The Frogs were 6-2 last season in games that Turner was healthy throughout the contest and 5-0 when he rushed for at least 56 yards.
Former TCU standout LaDainian Tomlinson won the 2000 Doak Walker Award.
