LA Angels 3, Texas Rangers 1

The Texas Rangers continued to pad the Angels' already-impressive won-loss record Friday night, losing 3-1 in Anaheim. The loss drops the Rangers to 66-70, a full 17 games behind the Angels with just 26 to play.

The Rangers were ahead early, thanks to a fourth-inning RBI single by Milton Bradley that drove in Michael Young. A potential home run later in the game by Marlon Byrd was snagged at the wall by Torri Hunter.

Other than those two moments, the once-lethal Rangers offense was surprisingly punchless. Angels starter Ervin Santana has utterly dominated the Rangers this season, and allowed just the one run over eight strong innings, improving to 14-5. K-Rod pitched a perfect ninth for his 52nd save, and is now just 5 behind Bobby Thigpen for the major league single-season record.

The Rangers wasted what was actually a shockingly good start by young pitcher Dustin Nippert. Nippert, who is normally relegated to mop-up duty, was pressed into the starting rotation due to injuries and gave up just three runs in five-plus innings. Nippert seemed to be mowing the Angels down with ease until the fifth, when a sacrifice fly and a two-run shot by Garrett Anderson ended Nippert's night. The pitcher gave up just five hits, walked two and struck out seven.
