Argyle’s Blanton Elementary to be dedicated December 2

The official dedication for the recently-opened Blanton Elementary School in Argyle is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 2.

Blanton Elementary was named after Dr. Annie Webb Blanton, who was the first woman in Texas elected to a statewide office. The school is the 20th elementary school for Denton Independent School District.

According to the Denton ISD, Dr. Blanton taught at the University of North Texas when it was known as North Texas Normal College. She impacted the history of Texas as the first female to serve as the superintendent of schools for the state of Texas.

During her tenure as state superintendent, a system of free textbooks was established, teacher certification laws were revised and teachers' salaries were raised.

Additionally, Dr. Blanton was the founder of Delta Kappa Gamma Society, a professional educational society for women that has today become a prominent local, state, national and international organization. Members of the local chapter will be attending the ceremony.

Tours of the school, located at 9501 Stacee Lane in Lantana, will be conducted before the ceremony starting at 6:30 p.m. Principal Karen Satterwhite and Assistant Principal Carolyn Ansley will participate in the official presentation of the building at 7 p.m.

Blanton's next door neighbor, the new Harpool Middle School, held their dedication on Nov. 10th.

For directions or more information, call the school at (940) 369-0700.
