Dallas area to see cool star alignment Monday night, along with rest of world
Venus, Jupiter, and the moon are aligning on Monday night in a way that will be eye-catching.
The two planets are in conjunction at the same time that the moon is "young" (and therefore just a sliver), so the planets will really stand out.
The sight is available for a limited-time-only: one hour after sunset, in the southwestern sky, and it lasts only a couple of hours.
In Australia, they saw it as a smiley face; we get a frown.
This story does a really good job of explaining the occurrence.
Venus is the brighter of the two planets, and it remains high in the southwest throughout December, while the gaseous Jupiter descends the western horizon all month. ... Young moons always appear briefly in the western sky at dusk and early evening.
And also their description of how it looks -- "it is easily mistaken for a distant jetliner approaching [an airport] with its landing lights on" -- matches exactly what I saw at about 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

And in the sign of the Goat in 2008, while this is a superior conjunction with a new Moon and Sun in the sign of the Archer, his arrows are off balanced in 3 to 4 days due to the constilation he is now heading into, thus the Virgin and Fishes, while another postive and frutifull aligment or conjuction is possible in the next two weeks, causing alot of regret and worry for freeway drivers who are now buying......Fords flying carpet, until then..A/T, Local Astromner.

If I were Jupiter, I'd take offense at being referred to as "gaseous."

Better to have Juipter, Venus and the Moon, thus the gas of any idealism could fly carpets....I would however, avoid the toxic gase's from Pinto beans boiled before the New Moon......A/T, Whole Foods Astronomer.

I prefer to think of it as an upside-down smiley face, T-Gubs -- it's only a frown if your eyes are on your chin. :)
