Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery suspended indefinitely for ‘sloppy seconds’ comment

0

— The National Hockey League announced this afternoon that it has suspended Dallas Stars forward Sean Avery indefinitely, pending a hearing with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, in accordance with the provisions of NHL By-Law 17 and Article 6 of the NHL Constitution for conduct "detrimental to the League or game of hockey." The suspension was imposed following inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game, made by Avery earlier today.

After the Flames' morning skate, Avery drew some reporters to him, explained how much he "loved Canada," before issuing a backhanded insult at former girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert, who is currently dating Calgary Flames defenseman Dion Phaneuf. Avery described his ex-girlfriend with the derogatory term "sloppy seconds."

You can see Avery making his comments here. Reaction from some Stars players is included after the video fades to black.

"I completely support the league's decision to suspend Sean Avery,” said Dallas Stars owner Thomas O. Hicks. “Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have. This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so.”

The date for the hearing has not yet been scheduled.
