The Denton Police Department has recommended suspension without pay for the jail employee who jokingly inferred that a prisoner’s release from jail was based on his vote for president. The incident which occurred on November 4, 2008, came to light after a reporter from the North Texas Daily newspaper contacted police officials about the matter.
The jail employee was immediately reassigned to a clerical detail inside the police department pending an internal investigation. The investigation revealed that the employee did make inappropriate comments to the prisoner. In addition, two other jail employees who were on duty during the incident were reprimanded.
The incident garnered media attention from around the country. Denton Police Chief Roy Minter commented, "The actions of these employees showed a complete lack of judgment, maturity and sensitivity. Their actions clearly violated our professional conduct policy and warrant disciplinary action."

That is not as bad as the comments made by some election workers and election judge in The Colony. Some of my volunteers were threatened with arrest because they were handing out literature--- outside the 100 foot line. The judge asks them to come into the poll to discuss. My volunteer did the right thing in asking for names, etc to file a report. The election clerk, in front of voters, mouthed off "Ha! We know what Party you must be from then!"

Another fine case of the "Big White Southern Dummy" sweating bullets due to the status quo changing. Heaven forbid we get a brother/sister of another race, religion or gender preference into office. It's like all the right-tilters are in freakout mode a Dem that is also a black man got elected. Im laughing about it as it shows once again the hypocracy that the Grand Ol' Party and its blind sheep followers have exhibited throughout its modern post-blockbusting jim crow history

I am so sick of all this PC bullsh*t. I don't care who the person is, what their job may be or position they hold, they should be allowed to verbalize their true opinion without reprimand.
It's "free speech." END OF STORY.

Jason, im saying its indicitive of a stereotypical old south idiots mentality, I dont know if Chris Saunier is white, black, orange or polka dotted. The fact of the matter is that Aruto Ntel, a new citizen of this country was in jail and received a mouthful harassment from a jailer who probably couldnt get a job being a real cop.
Lisa, this isnt a situation concerning free speech, its the fact the jailer offered a conceivible bribe to a inmate for an early release. Joking or not, thats still a very serious charge and one that could have the jailer spending some time in the clink himself.

Teasing someone from a position of authority really really really is a tightrope you don't wanna walk. Sometimes it can come off as jovial and sometimes it's flat out harassment.
Realistically, to be held on a warrant for failure to pay another fine elsewhere and then come out the victim feels a bit strained to me. To pretend you thought an unenforceable "verbal promise to vote against your wish" would result in getting to skip bond shows either a naiveté verging on quaint or a cleverness verging on collegiate smugness.
And Chris, you wouldn't tolerate a stereotype like "Big White Southern Dummy" directed at any other demographic, so chill.
{Lisa, sorry, one more tiny dose of PC - you can cuss me personally ;o)}
